Unfortunately, Dani’s journey was not a normal one for a Florida Panther. She was bred for sale, (now illegal) and bought for a 13-year-old boy as a pet. At three months old, they declawed her, and then sent her to a sanctuary three months later. The sanctuary was ordered to close nine months after that. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission determined the case a “failed pet attempt.” They then entrusted Dani to our care.
Despite the challenges she faced, Dani thrived at BCFC, becoming a beloved member of our family. Her lively spirit captured the hearts of everyone who encountered her. Professional photographer Thaddeus Wilkins caught her sitting like a squirrel for her morning treats! Through his stunning photographs, her memory lives on.
As one of the increasingly rare native Florida Panthers, Dani’s life was a testament to our mission of conservation, education, and preservation. We are honored to have provided her with a sanctuary where she lived nearly double the lifespan of her wild counterparts. BCFC provided Dani with the loving, dedicated care she deserved.
While we mourn Dani’s passing, we know she lived a full life, surrounded by those who loved her. Her legacy will continue to inspire us as we support Florida’s wildlife organizations. We will continue to offer resources to promote optimal welfare and safety for these magnificent creatures.
